The sketchbook and watercolours were produced at the height of the Carlist war, and as a result depict the environment that Richards moved in: mainly, Pasaia, Lezo, Alza and Donostia. The images of Hondarribia and Hernani must have been produced from May 1837 onwards, when the British Legion captured these two towns. Andoain, Tolosa and Bergara could only be visited after the end of the war in August 1839.
