This was the main victory of the British Legion in this war. Taking advantage of the departure of the main body of Carlist troops towards Madrid in the Royal Expedition, the San Sebastián Liberals broke the blockade that they had undergone, when the troops commanded by Sir George de Lacy Evans conquered Hernani, Oiartzun, Irun and Hondarribia Thomas took part in the battle and described it in the series of prints he published in London in 1840.
