- Rodrigo Sánchez Mercado de Zuazola obtains a bull from Pope Paul III to build a college dedicated to the Holy Spirit and a university joined to it. Founded in 1540 it begins operating in 1542 in Oñati where classes were given in theology, laws, canons, arts and medicine.
